Books into Movies - which one is better?

Movies from books are usually never as good. Does anyone think there's a movie out there that surpasses the book or at least comes close to being as good? Like "The Reader" that just won an Oscar?

One I actually enjoyed was "The Notebook".

Here's a list that I've found on Courant.com: Top 10 Must Read Books That Became Movies

I generally choose one or the other, but I've heard good things about the book and movie, He's Just Not Into You, which is out in theaters right now. Has anyone seen or read it?

I loved Mean Girls, which was adapted from the book Queen Bees and Wannabees. And I heard great things about The Notebook; it's several of my friends' favorite movie ever, but those classic romance stories just don't appeal to me, so I never saw it myself.

Thanks for posting that list, it was great! I didn't know so many of those movies were adapted from books.

I recently saw He's Just Not That Into You. The movie was good but my guess would be that the characters were more developed in the book. You should go see it.

The other movie from a book that was good was The Da Vinci Code. Although they should have cast someone other than Tom Hanks. (Like David Duchovny or something...)

Meh. "He's Just Not That Into You" was contrite and chock-full of one-dimensional characters. Also, there were these silhouettes of people that kept standing up and sitting down. And the camera work was jerky. Will not pirate again.

Weren't Slumdog Millionaire and Benjamin Button also adapted from books? I know BB was from a F. Scott Fitzgerald short. Watchmen and 300 were both graphic novels before they were films, as well as the numerous other superhero movies to come out in recent times.

I think there are circumstances when a book shouldn't be turned into a movie. After all, it's the story that people gravitate towards. A movie makes the story more accessible, and in the hands of a capable director and screenwriter might add a new dimension to it.
