I'll start:
I've heard that music licensing is one of the hardest parts of making a film. I found a great resource for fine quality music on the web:
http://www.magnatune.com/

Magnatune isn't evil (I met the CEO and he's definitely as un-evil as you can get) and they have a broad variety of songs to put to your film. I did a quick quote for a song to put in a film that would be shown in art-houses and festivals with full internet distribution, with my zero-budget Grilled Cheese production and it was $45. FORTY-FIVE DOLLARS.

Brian posted a couple film organizations for people to start with:
Media Center in Palo Alto (http://www.communitymediacenter.net) and smaller groups like Bay Area Video Coalition (http://www.bavc.org/) or Artists Television Access (http://www.atasite.org/)

There some great resources to be found at the sites listed below. Note for some of the organizations there are member fees

http://www.shootingpeople.org Shooting People - a great place to network plus has newsletters of upcoming events in SF/LA market. NY market, and UK market. As well as a scriptwriting newsletter. All of which geared towards Independent film makers.

http://www.filmindependent.org Film Independent is comprised of Independent Film makers and those who love independent film, They offer great classes on film.

http://fracturedatlas.org Fractured Atlas offer a service to help find money for your film. Getting health coverage for Indi Film makers, actors etc.

www.productionwizard.com allows you to search for suppliers etc for a production, and allows suppliers to advertise their services and it's FREE!
