Where to start with Lars von Trier

Set aside eight hours and burn through "The Kingdom". I remember seeing the full version in the theater, yes there was a 35mm print bouncing around the world, and going the whole eight hours, with intermissions of course.

By far the best thing von Trier ever worked on.

And you'll notice his style of hand held camera work that would lead to his style in "The Idiots" and other works.

The only complaint I have regarding the digital release of the series is von Trier doesn't talk about the segments at the end of the shows. In the theater version he was so cheesy, asking the audience to continue watching the battle of good vs. evil.

He has always intrigued me as a director. What was your favorite film that wasn't the kingdom?

i think a lot of viewers (at least american ones) got introduced to von trier with ZENTROPA. it's a great film, but it's a lot more overtly stylized than his other films (it uses color and black and white, rear projection, etc. etc. - dogme95 it ain't)

more recently, the gamesmanship makes THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS a fun read (and one of the rare movies where von trier shows you what he's feeling, though of course he's kind of obtuse about it).

except for THE IDIOTS, i've at least liked all of his films, but i find the director's personality more than a bit difficult.

I second Zentropa. But I can watch all 8 hours of The Kingdom and not get bored.

There was a film that I saw at a film festival that was a documentary on the making of The Idiots and how difficult of a director Lars is to work for. The making of The Idiots was much better than the film, which would've been more interesting if Lars just defecated for two hours.

I haven't been able to find that documentary and imdb.com doesn't list it. If anyone knows the film I'm talking about I'd love to track it down.

Denmark was nowhere on my radar for cinema.

And then I came upon the video for "The Celebration" and an irrefutable addiction was born. I had seen "Zentropa" but for whatever reason, it didn't click with me. Instead, I veered off into Dogma 95 terrain and never came back the same.

I'm intrigued by this doc based on "The Idiots" that's being discussed --- maybe it's included in the special features of this boxed collection? :

. . . Wait. Found it!

Here's an article (undated) about TWO documentaries on the making of "The Idiots":

"The Humiliated" (love the title), dir. Jaspar Jargil

"Lars from 1-10": 1998 short doc by Sophie Fiennes (guessing, Ralph's sister?)

I fell woefully behind on my watch list for Dogma 95 but now I feel inspired to track down "The Humiliated" . . . .
