Festival screenings - Tell us what you see!

Folks like me who prefer to see films theatrically are challenged on a number of fronts - limited venues, conservative distributors, and other economic and cultural factors that can only be speculated.

Film festivals remain the best opportunity to catch films off the radar of mainstream cinema. Often they're the ONLY opportunity to catch such films.

Please use this thread to tell us about the hidden gems that you've uncovered at the film festivals you've hit. It's all fair game - whether you've seen something at the most visible international film festival or found a quirky gem at an independent fest in a church or a nightclub basement, tell us about it here!

A few years ago at the SF Asian American Film Fest I heard of this tiny local film called Colma, the Musical (http://www.colmafilm.com/). Now folks who live in the Bay Area know that Colma is famous for two things. It houses more dead people than live ones since it's where all of the cemetaries for the people of San Francisco and the surrounding urban areas live. And it's almost always full of thick thick fog. So I was skeptical. Local filmmakers with a digital camera filming a musical in Colma? Even big Hollywood musicals with huge budgets have a hard time pulling off that whole "breaking into song" thing. Wow was I suprised. It's one of the best films I have ever seen at a film festival - and since I worked for film fests for over 7 years as a programmer, that's saying a lot.

My other favorite has to be the equally lo-fi, equally indie, and equally musical Secondary High (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365735/) from Toronto. It's like if a bunch of quirky artsy kids remade Rock and Roll High with a hefty dose of punk rock fun. SO GOOD!

One of my favorite film festival films has got to be The Matador. The film followed David "El Fandi" Fandila through three years of his career. From opening to end credits I was captivated and in love with every aspect of the film. The score, direction and real portrayal of the sport of bullfighting was remarkably on point. One of the best films featured at SXSW this year.

My favorite scene has to be the part where he gets gored by the bull and leaves the ring- gets the hole in his stomach closed- without drugs then goes back to fight the same bull that almost killed him- and breaks records. I'm sure PETA will have issues with this.

I saw Wanted at the Los Angeles Film Festival. Does that count?

One of the most memorable experiences I've had watching a film took place in Zellerbach Auditorium, in Berkeley, CA.

The film in question was the silent black and white classic, "La belle et la bete" directed by Jean Cocteau. The print was immaculate.

The kicker was provided by Philip Glass: he scored an opera for the film and the audience watched the film while live opera singers sang the "voices" of the actors in the film.
