Set in Ireland, boy meets girl, boy tries to get girl, boy sings to girl, girl sings with boy, but its not a musical. This is a great romantic film surrounded by great songs but has a realistic and touching story. Real-life musicians, Glen Hansard of the Frames is the Boy and Czech singer Marketa Irglova is the Girl. I've seen it twice and the film is worth seeing again.

I loved Once. It is one of the best independent films I have ever seen.

Unusal and almost semi-documentary in genre, as both the main characters are musicians in their own right. They eventually go their separate ways and come back to the people who abandoned them. I found it interesting that when he asks her whether she loves her husband, she replies in Czech, knowing he won't undersand, "I love YOU." But she resists his advances and decides that a relationship won't work.
