I'm a shameless advocate of Lars von Trier and just about anything by Dogma 95. Has anyone seen his terrifying tv series "The Kingdom" (original title: Riget) about a hospital where neither the facility, the patients, nor the staff seems quite right?
Dear Lars will do just fine in the realm of horror. Trust me.
I viewed a legitimate copy of the first part of "The Kingdom" series and a not-so-legitimate copy of the second half of the series (I can't believe my local video store did this to me). Due to this, I missed an essential link between part 1 and part 2.
I was home alone, didn't quite know what this series was about other than it was created by Lars von Trier, and was freaked out for weeks on end after watching it. And I simply couldn't stop watching it and just spent the entire weekend fixating on the screen. I still have bags under my eyes from the sleepless night I suffered over this series.
You can do the same because the entire series is available through Jaman. Go ahead, spread the fear.
I think pairing guileless Gainsbourg with weathered Dafoe in a horror film is very original casting even though if I were Gainsbourg, I'd be more scared of Dafoe than the Antichrist. My one reservation of having the two play a married couple is the obvious wide age difference between Gainsbourg and Dafoe. (About 16 years, if you're counting, and with Dafoe looking as haggard as possible these days, you may mistake it for 36.)
Lars von Trier is suppose to be a born-again Christian so it will be interesting to see how this element manifests itself in the film. It played on the surface of Breaking the Waves with Emily Mortimer's character single-mindedly pursuing the terms of marital devotion to the best of her understanding.
