Dracula Vs. Frankenstein: Al Adamson's "Citizen Kane"

So, I was emailing back and forth with a guy who'd seen my cult movie podcast (see my profile for these clips) about Al Adamson, and I was recounting how much I really enjoyed "Dracula Vs. Frankenstein." He called it Adamson's "Citizen Kane," and that kind of stuck in my head.

Here's the trailer:

I really enjoyed the movie... it was well-shot and the story was weird but good. My only complaint is that the Dracula vs. Frankenstein part only happened at the very end of the film.

What did you think?

reminds me of the tagline for "Shakes the Clown" -- "The Citizen Kane of Alcoholic Clown Movies."

Shakes! I so badly want to see it!!! Do you have it?

As a mime, I'm a little afraid, but I think I should make it through.

Funnily enough, DRACULA VS FRANKENSTEIN and quite a few other Adamson pics were shot by cinematographer Gary Graver, who would go on to be a key collaborator on Orson Welles' later projects (including F FOR FAKE, FILMING OTHELLO, and a few TV projects).

Al Adamson was an interesting character. He was known for taking footage from abandoned projects and then shooting new footage and adding additional abandoned/found footage to create a "feature" film with little regard for the fact that the old footage and new seldom matched or that the story never made a whole lot of sense. Apparently the footage that makes this film was shot over a period of two years (1969-71). Might have been footage from several different projects, all unfinished, then hobbled together to form...this. This was was Lon Chaney Jr.'s final horror film role and J. Caroll Naish's last film period. Lovers of bad old school b-movies will love this. They don't make 'me like this anymore that's for sure - at least not and get theatrical release!
