Dil Chahta Hai is my all-time favorite Bollywood film. Side-stepping the fact that the main character (played by Aamir Khan) shares the same name as me, the film really is a ground-breaking step into a new realm of filmmaking. Let's not forget this masterpiece of a film was directed by debutant (at the time) Farhan Akhtar, who was only 26 when he created this cinematic experience!!! Fresh blood really can re-pump life into a dying entity like the Indian Film Industry.
The script was absolutely brilliant, touching on such themes as inter-relationshal conflict, forbidden romance, and the lives of Indian youths. All this, splashed by the re-ermergance of impeccable comic relief by Saif Ali Khan, who was re-born in DCH (and has since done his finest work). Actually Vidhu Vinod Chopra referred to Saif as a "long-haired fool" before he took his job seriously in DCH.
I recommend EVERYONE go see this film. It is flawless in every sense. The only negative is that Farhan Akhtar had set the bar WAY too high on his first attempt, leaving him nowhere else to go but down (Lakshya regressed and Don regressed even further).
All in all, this film is perfect for the classes, the masses, the youth, and the elders. It has the emotion, it has the song-dance, it has the sensitivity, and it has the comedy... without ever confusing one with another. What more could you want in a film?
This film goes down as the greatest Hindi Film in recent times in my book. Please, go check this out.
Agreed, Aakash - DCH is a wonderful film. I come to it with a very different perspective from yours. The first time I saw it was very early in my exploration of Hindi films, and while I liked it I did not really appreciate the things that really set it apart and made it special. When I watched it a second time, after seeing about 50 Hindi films, I could begin to see what a truly excellent and distinct piece of filmmaking it was; the way that it simultaneously draws upon and defies time-honored Bollywood conventions.
Agreed, agreed, agreed (about Dil Chahta Hai, anyway; I liked Don: the Chase Begins Again). While I won't deny that there are particularly Indian resonances to the story, overall it holds universal appeal. Everything about it is done with such care and thought. It is sensitive to the typical problems of young people, which can so easily be treated as throw-away, without being indulgent. All the characters, including their flaws, are respected. For me, the movie also holds a special place for its wonderful story about friendship - a topic often overlooked in and underserved by movies.
All this and very, very funny, too! Its one tiny flaw is the horrendously sappy picturization of Sid's love song, looking like Lisa Simpson's bedroom if it age too much cotton candy; however, this is more than made up for by the clever and joyful "Woh Ladki Hai Kahan," quite possibly the best picturizaiton in all of Hindi cinema.
A must-see - and a repeatable-see. Thanks, Aakash, for writing about this great film.
Yup, 26. Amazing isn't it? You're absolutely right. The fulcrum of the entire film was the theme of friendship. It was brought out beautifully by the actors and Farhan. The riff between Sid and Akash, the torn in the middle (Sameer), and then the power of true friendship reuniting the three.
I can't say enough about this film. I know i'm going out on a limb. But for me, this is probably in the top 3 list of the Greatest Indian Films ever created (if not the best). And I stand by my declaration whole-heartedly!
I don't know how I found this discussion, but it prompted me to see Dil Chata Hai.Ok, so I have no life and watch anything that remotely peaks my interest--lol-that and I am in the honeymoon stage with Jaman.:)
Anyways, great film. The first word that comes to mind for me is balance. Comedy, romance, drama perfectly harmonized in one package. The chemistry between the 3 lead actors is awesome. All of the actors did a great job, and I really liked Preity Zinta in what I am assuming was one of her first roles(?)Dimple Kapadia...the character I searched for in the credits to find out who she was.She was enchanting! I always love watching Aamir fall in love, I do think he is one of the finest actors I have experienced in Bollywood. My mom happened to sit in the room with me during the opera scene and was hooked to the end(although I made her promise to rewatch it from the beginning to get the full effect because I hate when people graze a film).I would recommend this film or show to anyone whom I am trying to convert into a Bollywood fan!
