"My name is Beth, and I'm a Bollyholic." "Hi, Beth."
C'mon on in, say hello, and share what you love about Hindi films. No judgment here - we understand if it was actually the pleather pants or choli ke peeche that made you start watching.

Go on girl with your bollywood loving self. For me...it's the melodrama and the thought that at any moment life's seriousness can be interrupted with a song and dance. Keep's things light - kind of a brings to mind the old saying "life's too mysterious, don't take it serious" I'd add, swing your hips and let the music and magic and color take you away.

Hi I am Anju, I have been watching Hindi Cinema most of my life. It's my comfort food type of film. When everything is going to heck in handbag I pull out my trusty collection of old Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor etc. And hide in the comfort of a time less crazy.

Nice analogy Anju - comfort food. It's true, that is how I feel in many ways. Nice to sink into a magical world a with a warm cup of chai and familiar faces, familiar music and a deep sigh.

Okay, I guess I'll have to stop lurking on the site and start commenting :D
What made me start watching? A very persuasive (= persistent) flatmade who more or less had to drag me to my first Bollywood film a few years ago. She dragged, I stared in horror (it was the late 90s and the film, esp. the clothes, was beyond bad - she actually apologized afterwards). It had a dance scene that I liked but that was the only redeeming quality. Especially for someone who didn't have a clue what was actually going on. I immediately tried to forget all about it - including cast, title and plot. Then she lured me into watching a few others and that was it. Addiction.

I started gaining interest in bollywood movies after watching a community access channel that played videos from India and Pakistan. After that... it's all history! I cannot get enough of bollywood!!! I have to watch/listen to/ read something about bollywood every day or I'll go insane!! :) I love to watch all of the dancing (partly because I'm a dancer) and all of the different styles.

Hey Michelle - I totally understand! I used to watch them on community access too (are you in Toronto, by any chance?), but it was years after that that I sat through a whole movie, and then, like you, I was bitten.

I became a bollywood addict about 3 years ago when I accidentally discovered the beautiful world of bolly movies (and indian movies in general). I love bollywood movies because they make me smile and happy when I watch them. They are a really good type of relax for me after a stressfull day.

For me its the romance, the tragic love stories that linger in your mind long after the film is over... Its an escape from reality, and the movies are long enough that you get really invested in the characters. You are in another world with music and passion and beautiful people and scenery. And there is nothing like those scenes were you hold your breath because the chemistry is so strong, then the subtitles appear in between musical notes and it the wind starts to blow, releasing the tension into a beautiful melody....Some of the really great Bollywood movies are those you want to watch over and over....
