i just want to congratulate jaman for the acquisition of the films from the indian governments film collection - NFDC. these films are gems of indian cinema and some of them stand up to the best in world cinema. as an indian film maker i have not seen a lot of these films because they are completely inaccessible. by placing them on jaman you have done a huge service to indian film makers and indian cinema as a whole. today the world only knows about the mainstream hindi films - "bollywood". the fact that we have masters of indian cinema and have produced great indian films many decades ago is little known. these films also bring out real life problems and reflect indian society taking up issues and relationships that are relevant today - and do them dramatically and aesthetically - so that they are not just some "boring artsy films". thank you jaman - you are true pioneers and we are indebted to you. onward good indie cinema!
Right on! I think the addition of the NFDC films has taken Jaman's collection of Indian films - which was already pretty good, considering its size - to a new level.
I came to Indian film via art films, and sometimes I spend quite a bit of energy defending art films against some fans of mainstream Bollywood - some who are convinced that art films are boring, preachy, and ponderous. They don't have to be, and the NFDC collection has many exemplars are films that aren't.
Shonali, I just want to add - I have heard nothing but exuberant praise for your own film, *Amu*, and I do hope I get a chance to see it soon!
I'd like to congratulate Jaman as well on the NFDC acquisition. Although some of these films have eluded my attention (due to the inaccessibility as Shonali has mentioned), the names associated with these films are really what attract one to them. Such pioneering directors such as Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Ray, Sudhir Mishra, Aparna Sen, Kalpana Lajmi, are all masterminds in the field, as wintnessed from some of their more well-known works.
Take your time, and go through these films... they are amongst the best that world cinema has to offer.
seriously, I have been wanting to see some of these films all my life, but having a community forum to discuss them as well as a context to see them in really does them justice. It's jaman's platform as well as its cinema choices that make it all worth while.
I completely agree with you that at last we serious movie buffs are able to see some great indian cinema that was completely unavailable. Thank you Jaman for this wonderful service.
I still have a question, how does one get hold of personal copies of some of the other great movies that nfdc has financed and which are in it's archives?
For that you would have to contact NFDC. Is there a film in particular you are interested in?
Also, we want as many people to have access to these films so, spread the good word - you can use your Jaman invites to invite your friends (you get 2 free movies!) or send them to www.jaman.com/india.
