Yes!Yes!
Before this year is over, we would have been subjected to the maximum number of second-hand movies in the history of Indian cinema. Its going to be a long and rocky road, replete with the badly smashed and rusty hulks of remixed experiments-past and present-for anyone who would want to take a walk down memory lane of Bollywoodland by the end of 2007.
I personally think its going to be a proud moment for every single one of us who love and root for Indian movies for this world class feat of having lapped up the maximum number of re-heated movies in the world.
I sure feel on the top of the world.
Slated for release on October 12,2007, Bhool Bhulaiya is the latest offering in the loooong and exhaustive list of remakes by the only reigning remake specialist of the country, Mr. Priyadarshan who started this
innovative 'con-cept' way back in 1992 with remaking his own box office hit in Malayalam, Kilukkam into an unrecognisable thing called Muskurahat starring Jay Mehta and Revathi. Bhool Bhulaiya is the remake of the critically acclaimed and the hugely successful Manichithrathazhu (1993) in Malayalam and the story is based on a couple coming home from a foreign land to find their ancestral property possibly haunted. And added to the superstitions and myths that has the whole adjoining village in its iron-clad fist, they invite their friend, an acclaimed psychiatrist to set right the case.
It is still considered as one of those 'perfect' movies that brilliantly married all the elements of a good movie and yet became a huge commercial success and won Shobana her National Award for Best Actress in 1994.
The movie was remade into Aaptamitra in Kannada with Vishnuvardhan in the lead role which went on to become the box office hit of that year in Kannada.
P.Vasu, the acclaimed Tamil director scouting for a script for Rajnikanth's next project, chanced upon this gem and moulded it into Anna's next box office success, Chandramukhi. It's still running to packed halls now.
That's the power of a good story and a good script.
So now it gets its Hindi avatar with Akshay playing the main protagonist (the doctor from US) along with Shiney Ahuja and Vidya Balan as the couple and Priyadarshan favourites all making their appearances.
As far as the fate of remixes go and the fate of Priyadarshan's latest releases goes, it would take more than luck to make it blow the registers way.
I hope that it does.
Atleast that way, we get a movie worth mentioning for 2007 as a commercial success.
