Now I know why RGV remade Sholay. It was to increase the standing of the original movie in our eyes. And if that was his primary purpose, he succeeds like hell. RGV Ki Aag sounds like the title of a sleazy entertainer and this one does come quite close to that. In fact it also becomes gory and bloody as it goes on. RGV has failed to retain the soul of the original and gets lost in his over-indulgence and dark way of doing things. Casting Amitabh Bachchan as Babban was considered to be a masterstroke by many (including yours truly) but the characterisation goes overboard and finally what we have is something unthinkable. I was chatting with my friend, Sam and I think those lines describe the movie the best. Sam: how was aag?
Ankit: Torturous
I mean now I know how great a movie Sholay is
Sam: Good
Ankit: It (Aag) increased it's (Sholay's) standing in my eyes
Sam: That was RGVs aim actually.
Ankit: Sholay was open, white and blue Aag is closed, black and dark
Sholay was AB-Dharmendra chemistry Aag is Ajay Devgan-Prashant Raj as strangers
Ankit: Sholay was lively through Basanti and Dhanno Aag is hamming through Ghungroo and Laila
Sam: :)
Ankit: Sholay was restrained through Sanjeev Kumar Aag is hurt and hospitalised through Mohan Lal
Sholay was about Gabbar's terror Aag is about Babban's pyschiatric problems
Ankit: Sholay instilled fear in villagers of Ramgadh; Aag instilled hatred in residents of Kaaligunj
Ankit: Amjad as Gabbar is legendary Amitabh as Babban is cartoonish
Sam: Paapa AB
Ankit: Sambha was the able lieutenant of Gabbar Taambe is the confidaant of Babban
Sam: Oh..Taambe??? How lame..
Ankit: Gabbar's hideout was an open area Babban is inside Bombay 's RK Film city
Sam: :)
Ankit: Veeru is Hero and Jai is Raj And it is better now both of them go to Haj
(That was just for the rhyming effect)
Sam: Abba.. the poet in Adi..
Ankit: Sholay's music was a showstopper Aag's music is okie-dokie
Ankit: Sholay had two intervals Aag has as many as the number of songs
Sam: Oh my god
Ankit: Hema Malini as the Basanti was loveable Nisha Kothari as Ghungroo is yuck
Mohan Lal as Sanjeev kumar? Was Paresh Rawal somewhere else? Soul of the director inside Ram Gopal Varma may rest in peace
Sam: Amen
