Carved Out of Pavement: The Work of Rob Nilsson
On April 28, the 50th San Francisco International Film Festival will present an intimate evening with filmmaker Rob Nilsson where he will discuss his filmmaking style and show excerpts from several works-in-progress. Here’s a terrific opportunity to see four complete films from the Nilsson oeuvre.
"Film should be a search, an investigation of things you find fascinating and pertinent," says Nilsson. “But I don’t see it in most of American cinema. It’s either about genres, or it’s about stars, or it’s about goofy little stories that are meant to entertain. . . . I can’t entertain anybody. I can hardly entertain myself. All I can do is follow my passions." For 30-odd years Nilsson has been doing just that.
The San Francisco Film Society is pleased to present this quartet of films from his Direct Action World Cinema series which brings together four critical ingredients transplanted to communities in different parts of the world. Firstly, Direct Action Cinema is a method of creating drama from character and circumstance seeking emotional depth and street level authenticity. Secondly, it employs an ensemble of committed actors for each production. It utilizes digital technology for the production, marketing, distribution, and exhibition of high quality feature films at a fraction of industry costs. Finally, the Direct Action film intends to be a more efficiently produced and personally meaningful cinema that speaks from the human heart.
