I found my way to Hindi films via parallel cinema: favorites include Ankur, Shatranj ke khilari, and 1947: Earth. Arth is another favorite, one that straddles the line between art and mainstream film.
I also count Madhuri Dixit, Hema Malini, Sharmila Tagore, Smita Patil, Madhubala, Manisha Koirala, Sanjeev Kumar, Shashi Kapoor, Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Aamir Khan among my favorites.
