Sony Pictures first venture in India is a tie up with Sanjay Leela Bhansali Called Saawariya. This
is the New York times piece. on it.
Saawariya is said to be a filming of Dostoevski's Short story White Nights, (which Robert Bresson made into Quatre nuits un revier (1971), an obsucre bresson, about an artist meeting a girl on a bridge four nights in a row).
(Parelelly, Sony is threatening to Sue Eros entretainment to the tune of $ 30 Mm for it's last Salman Khan Starrer "partner" which it feels is directly Inspired by it's own film "Hitch".)
The bollywood version of White Nights stars a bevvy of topflight talent from India - Salman Khan, Rani Mukharjee Sonam kapoor(the Daughter of Anil Kapoor) and Ranbir Kapoor (the Son of Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh). It's directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali(devdas), Music By ismail Durbar(devdas) and cinematographed by Ravi K Chandran.
For Salman Khan, it will be his second big international production to hit the marquee in quick succession, after Marigold's release.(Saanvariya is expected to open Nov 9, 07).
The New york times article makes the point that 19 out of 20 entretainment dollars spent in India goes to Indigenous productions, a market Sony(and Disney, and Paramount) plans to enter with productions such as Saawariya , using Bollywood's indigenous talent.
Should be simple enough....
