The story of an atypical man in a familial and societal setting that doesn’t account for deviation: Robert lives with his overbearing sister and works in construction. He’s compelled to write poetry, drawn to it with such an impulse that he can do nothing but submit. Yet he can’t account, even to himself, for his passion, and employs great energies in concealing his addiction to verse. As his prying sister comes closer to discovering this secret pursuit, Robert’s fear augments to a phobia of discovery, one that he will satisfy even at the lengths of violence and self-destruction.
